Great Music to Lift Our Hearts

Picking up spirits and elevating hearts on this mournful anniversary.

How about we take the bull by the horns and reverse the degradation of our culture by embracing one of European civilization's greatest gifts to the world?

We need to bathe our spirits in great music.

We need to enlighten our kids, so they know that there is a higher musical summit to appreciate beyond the crack-fueled street crap they are hooked on.

And we must remind the Stone Age heathens who seek to destroy our civilization (libs, globalist and Islamists) that they will NEVER be on a par with us.

Today, I am posting music that proves Western & Eastern Civilizations will always outshine the heathens.

La Bohème

One of the most powerful musical homages to an artist's life you'll ever hear.

So glad I finally found the English language version on YouTube. Aznavour has recorded it in at least 7 languages.

LYRICS & CHORDS

[Verse 1]
Fm
Let me tell of a time,
Fm
When the world was in rhyme,
                      Cm
With the sound of our laughter.
Cm Fm
Montmartre hung with flowers,
                  Cm
For far-forgotten hours,
Cm
Of hunger and of love.
               Fm
Unaware in our youth,
Fm
Of the sobering truth,
                       Cm
Of the years that came after.
              G7
We laughed at common men,
Fm
For we were heroes then,
                  Cm
And heaven smiled above.

[Chorus 1]
Fm Cm
La Bohème, La Bohème.
Fm G7 Cm C7
Poor hungry you, poor hungry me.
Fm Cm
La Bohème, La Bohème.
Fm G7 Cm
Silly old world that could not see.

[Verse 2]
Fm
All those innocent hearts,
Fm
Who imagined their arts,
                  Cm
Could be casually mastered.
Cm Fm
I miss them every one,
                           Cm
For the sands of time have run
Cm
Away for each and all.
                      Fm
For it seems that our schemes,
Fm
Were impossible dreams,
                      Cm
That could never have lasted.
            G7
For when we woke at last,
Fm
The big parade had passed,
                        Cm
And spring had gone its way.

[Chorus 2]
Fm Cm
La Bohème, La Bohème.
Fm G7 Cm C7
Someone to care, someone to mind.
Fm Cm
La Bohème, La Bohème.
Fm G7 Cm
We were in love and love is blind.

[Verse 3]
Fm
Now and then I return,
Fm
And the memories burn,
                   Cm
With a bittersweet aching.
Cm Fm
I climb the same old stairs,
                  Cm
But no-one longer cares,
Cm
And there's no-one to greet.
                        Fm
In the streets where we walked,
Fm
And the bars where we talked,
                   Cm
Of a world we were making.
        G7
I stand upon that hill,
Fm
Until I drink my fill,
                  Cm
Then leave it all behind.

[Chorus 3]
Fm Cm
La Bohème, La Bohème.
Fm G7 Cm C7
Moments of joy, moments of pain.
Fm Cm
La Bohème, La Bohème.
Fm G7 Cm
Nothing can bring them back again.

Carlos Gardel

Here is a film clip of Carlos Gardel singing his classic "Por Una Cabeza". This film may be in the Paramount library but I cannot find a trace of it on IMDB.

By the way, the term "Por Una Cabeza" (for one head) is a horse-racing term, equivalent to "by a nose". It is about a gambler who compares his love of women to his passion for horses.

Gardel died in a plane crash in 1935 in Medellin, Colombia at the height of his worldwide fame. He was only 47.

In a career spanning 18 years, he took tango from pedestrian musical genre to a global phenomenon...simply by adding lyrics to the hyper sensual notes. He was the Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra of his time in the Latin and European world.

Born in Toulouse, France to a poor single mother, they emigrated to Buenos AIres when he was 4 years old.
He eventually became the world's most famous Latin American and was a star in NYC, Paris, Barcelona and Madrid. Paramount Pictures hoped to make him an international film star too, until his untimely death.

IDIOTS, MORONS, IMBECILES, CRETINS

Do you know difference between these words?

According to British legal stature...
1) an idiot is an individual with an IQ of less than 20,
2) an imbecile has an IQ of between 20 and 49, and
3) a moron an IQ between 50 and 69.
4) a cretin is specifically a person with a deformity or mental retardation caused by a thyroid deficiency; cretinism is now more commonly called hyperthyroidism.

Idiot is derived from the Greek for "private person" (as in idiosyncracy);
Imbecile is a construction from a Latin phrase meaning "without a stick";
Moron is from the Greek for "childish";
Cretin comes, via the French, from the word "Christian" and implies a holy person - "God's fool" as it were.

Christmas Tree Shops

It was my mom's favorite store.
From the very 1st one in YarmouthPort on Cape Cod.
It grew into a retail giant!
Who knew?
We always teased mom about it.
But she was their target audience.

HISTORY

Christmas Tree Shops has its beginnings in the 1950s, in a barn in the quaint Cape Cod town of Yarmouthport, Massachusetts. The store was a holiday gift shop called The Christmas Tree Gift Shop and sold Christmas gifts and ornaments May through October.

Twenty years later, Chuck and Doreen Bilezikian bought the seasonal shop, and with their sons, began to transform the business into a destination for one-of-a-kind items and real value prices. They found authentic deals for their customers, and stocked the shelves with closeouts, overruns by well-known manufacturers, and unique products at wholesale prices. The buildings were renovated into quaint bargain-filled spaces known as the Barn Shop, the Front Shop and the Back Shop (which is why it’s Christmas Tree Shops instead of Shop). Customers were delighted with the treasures -- and the prices -- and slowly the business became a year-round operation. Though no longer a Christmas shop, the name remained, and added even more character to the store's distinctive personality.

Christmas Tree Shops expanded along Cape Cod, opened the first off-Cape store in 1981, and continued to grow. Visitors to New England and Cape Cod fell in love with the quirky, charming stores that carried just about everything under the sun (including the beach umbrella and the sunscreen). For vacationing families, a trip to Christmas Tree Shops became as anticipated as the first trip to the beach. During the holidays, Christmas Tree Shops was (and still is) a wonderland of home décor, trim-a-tree, gifts, stocking stuffers, holiday baking supplies and so much more.

In 2003, the buzz about Christmas Tree Shops caught the attention of housewares and home furnishings retailer Bed Bath & Beyond, and later that year, Christmas Tree Shops became part of the Bed Bath & Beyond family. Recognizing that everyone loves an amazing value, Bed Bath & Beyond began introducing Christmas Tree Shops to markets beyond New England and the northeastern United States. In 2012, to communicate to customers in those new markets that the store is more than a holiday destination, new stores opened with either andThat! or Christmas Tree Shops andThat! as the name. Today more than 70 Christmas Tree Shops andThat! and andThat! stores are located in 21 states.

Roger Ridley

Roger Ridley performing in Santa Monica shortly before died in 2005.

In the 1990s Roger played on the NYC subway platforms and I used to watch him every day during my commute. I'd listen with tears in my eyes. No singer had more soul. I gave him tips each time. And I'd often miss my train because I could not leave. I was transfixed by his greatness.

Around 2001 he left NYC to perform regularly in Las Vegas at the (then new) New York New York Hotel in the role of (what else?) a street performer.

Ridley eventually moved to Santa Monica and got "discovered" by music producer Mark Johnson. Roger's performance of "Stand By Me" inspired Johnson to produce this round-the-world rendition... viewed by more than 106,000,000 people.
